At Catalyst Resources, we design efficient and elegant User Interfaces for complex commercial and mission critical software applications. Since 1994 we have designed and developed more than 400 software applications for market leaders and VC funded organizations including JP Morgan Chase, Charles Schwab, Reuters, Cisco Systems, and Salesforce.com. We have offices in Silicon Valley, New York, Vancouver, London and Milan. Our team is looking for a highly experienced application UI designer.
THE JOB
Good news for you is this position will allow you to work on or off site with flexible hours. Bad news is we expect you to be available once in a while during business hours for meetings. For a good fit, the position has the potential to move from contract to permanent and/or full time employment.
THE SKILLS
- Understanding the overall user interface requirements and the various options for creating a quality user experience.
- Help to define the user experience vision for our clients' products.
- A highly experienced application designer with visual and interaction design experience in business-oriented applications.
- Proficiency with the Adobe line of design tools, i.e. Photoshop and Fireworks.
- Strong knowledge of user interface design processes and methodology, particularly as applied to web-based applications.
- Highly organized, strong attention to detail, excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to create functional wireframes and visual design skins.
- Ability to identify and solve complex problems in creative ways.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team construct.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, human-computer interaction, psychology, graphic design, or related field or comparable experience.
- Knowledge of popular UI toolkits.
ABOUT YOU
You view yourself as a highly experienced application UI designer and most likely have a formal design background. You clearly understand the differences between website design, visual design, and application design. You have a solid portfolio of UI designs for enterprise, SaaS and mission-critical applications. You have excellent design skills including very strong creative, conceptual and problem solving skills and the ability to generate design ideas. You have strong ability to understand and integrate customer needs and motivations into specific areas of product design to contribute to user features and functionality as well as extensive knowledge of software tools for design, production and implementation.

Our team is looking for application UI developers with experience in browser based client side (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), Rich Internet Application (RIA) Development, Microsoft, and Java centric UI development. Most of our work pertains to Software as a Service (SaaS), not website design. You must therefore be very comfortable with advanced layouts and complex client-side functionality.
You'll be working on browser, mobile, and tablet platforms.

ABOUT YOU
You have been working with designers in the past and are very comfortable working from .psd or .png reference files. You understand your code will be handed off to a team of back end developers that you will support throughout the implementation process. Your resume might not be the greatest Word document but you can point us to live samples of the applications you have been working on. You might have done a couple of websites to help out friends but this is a very marginal activity for you.
Fulltime UI Architect (SF Bay Area)
In this role, you must be able to understand end-user workflows and design user interfaces that are intuitive and optimize workflow. We are looking for someone who is passionate about user-centered design and usability in general, with the ability to create both compelling concepts and work through complex details. You should have experience working in collaborative environments, integrating user-centered design, technology, and business strategy, and managing clients. You also are adept at applying best practices for UI via the agile process. You enjoy working independently, taking initiative, and innovating.
Key Responsibilities
- Create interaction flows, screen wire frames and mockups.
- Review and provide feedback on UI designs and implementation with a view to usability and user requirements.
- Interface with internal stakeholders across the organization to present designs and gather feedback.
- Work closely with product managers, developers and other internal stakeholders throughout the product design process.
- Create and maintain detailed UI Style and Design documentation.
- Work in close collaboration with internal customers and teams to develop strategies that address product content and overall user experience design for Catalyst’s clients.
- Ensure user requirements are sufficiently understood to develop UI and workflow designs.
Required Technical Skills and Experience
- Ability to communicate effectively with diagrams, in writing, verbally and as a presenter.
- Ability to articulate business strategy and branding issues, and to balance these with user needs and technological constraints.
- Ability to work in a team-based environment and the ability to work constructively with engineering and artistic teams.
- Demonstrated ability to manage clients, communicate persuasively, and resolve issues.
- A passion for details.
- Knowledge of Adobe products, MS Visio, MS Word, and MS Excel.
- Degree or diploma in a related discipline such as Human Computer Interaction, Graphic Design or User Experience Design is an asset.
- Previous experience translating design ideas into workflows in the design of information systems.
- Experience with defining UI for enterprise software and SaaS.
Required Non-Technical Skills
- Keen interest in User Centered Design and practices.
